Sets and Scenery for "Big"

Art Club members will begin working on the musical backdrop October 26th. We will meet in the auditorium and begin to prime the backdrop white. Sketching of the backdrop will follow along with painting and some construction work. Check back for more details later.

Linoleum Prints and Pit Firing Starting Soon!

Painting students will be taking on the challenge of Linoleum prints. They are studying various subject possibilities and design elements to featured in their own work. As a follow up, they will be studying the Japanese Woodcuts.

3-D Design students have studied the processes of Maria Martinez and Blackware Pottery. Next week, they'll be wedging up their clay and coiling their forms for a pit firing to be held this spring.

Another brother and sister team won Judge's Awards, Asher and Hannah. Asher received recognition for two potter pieces and a charcoal study and Hannah for her two table designs and a pen and ink drawing. (Photo will be coming soon)

Trevor and Rachelle both received Judge's Awards at the Art Show held March 5th in Jefferson. Trevor is shown with his work titled, "Blue Frog" and Rachelle is with her work titled, "Dance".

HOIAC ART SHOW-MARCH 5TH

The annual HOIAC art show was held this Thursday at the Greene County Recreation Center in Jefferson, Iowa. Fifteen schools were represented in the show. The day began with the setting up of all the artwork and then a trip to Des Moines. The students and art teachers viewed art galleries in the Valley Junction area followed by a guided tour of the Des Moines Art Center. During the field trip, Maureen Seamonds and Rusty Farrington, art instructors from Iowa Central College. Many pieces received recognition and a best of show was selected. After the field trip, the students and teachers were able to view the exhibit and the judges talked about the work. This year Ogden received 12 Judge's Awards. Those earning awards: Rachel Stephens/sculpture, Ashton Van Sickle/pottery & charcoal, Dusty Geigle/jewelry, Hannah Van Sickle/crafts & pen and ink, Trevor Stephen/watercolor, Rebecca Nation/printmaking, and Josh Peter/charcoal. Over 50 works were entered and received HOIAC certificates. Ogden students attending and helping with years set up included: Joe Lucero, Kristina Rose, Alycia West and Hannah Van Sickle.

After Many Springs: Regionalism, Modernism and the Midwest

Clayton Nida, Roman Malone, Alycia West, Hannah Van Sickle, Kristina Rose, and Ashlei Pritichard viewed the "American Gothic" first hand along with other regionalist artwork. Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, John Steuart Curry, and Jackson Pollack were featured in the exhibit being held at the Des Moines Art Center. It was interesting to see a familiar subject being featured by well-known artists. The exhibit will run through May 17th. If you haven't had a chance to see it, take an afternoon to Des Moines and check it out. You'll be impressed.

New Ideas for Art Club

At our last meeting, January 20th, students discussed having Studio Nights and Afterdark Craft Nights each month.

Studio nights will allow students to earn points for lettering in art club. Students will learn and help mat and prepare work for upcoming art shows. Students may also use this time to catch up on projects. The first Studio Night will be held January 28th starting @ 3:30pm.

Afterdark Craft Nights will be offered once a month starting in January thru April depending on student interest. We will run a trial craft night January 22nd. Students will be working on decorating bookmarks for Harbor Groups. Pizza will be served.

Classes are Busy with 2nd Quarter Projects...

Students are off and running with a variety of projects. Projects range from Choice Drawings to Idea Books to making Band Rings to Campaign Art. Many of the projects are being displayed in the hallways. Idea Books will end the semester for the Basic Design students...mark down the due date: December 15th!!!! Until then more projects will be added to the student portfolio.
Don't forget courses end at semester...start preparing for 2nd semester by signing up for your art class now...Painting and Printmaking, 3-D Design, Advanced Art (seniors only), and Graphic Communications. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Kruse.

Pumpkin Sales...

Approximately 10 art club members worked on decorating mini pumpkins for Art Club's Fall Fundraiser. They decorated with glitter, paint and ribbon. Thanks to all who supported this activity!

Classes @ a Glance!

Basic Design-Students are just finishing up CD Covers and starting their grid drawings for the Tempera Painting project.

Drawing-Students are beginning to work with charcoal in a project called Eraser Drawings. They are using a subtractive and additive process with subjects of their choice. Game chalk pastel drawings are now coming in and will be on display in the OHS hallway.

Advanced Art-Students are studying the 4 art theories and completing studio projects based on each. Art as Realism, Art as Formal Order and Art as Expression projects will be finished by quarter. A group project for Art as Function is being considered for those that wish to participate. Others can work individually.

Jewelry-Students have been working with metal learning and demonstrating beginning processes such as: sawing, filing, sanding, and polishing. They have completed an abstract Metal Form and are currently finishing up Native American Fetishes as their pierced piece project.
